Data Detective was a peer-to-peer learning activity organised by the ReImagine IT Club for students of the Department of Information Technology and Data Science. Working in teams of two to four, students solved a data "case" across three rounds, from cleaning raw data to presenting their conclusions.

Highlights

  • Skills practised: data cleaning, analysis and visualisation, logical reasoning, teamwork, and data storytelling.
  • Tools used included Python (Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib), Google Colab or Jupyter Notebook, and Excel.
  • An offline, team-based activity pitched at beginner to intermediate level.
  • The Head of Department, Dr. Santosh Shukla, and faculty members supported and encouraged the participants throughout.

A final-year project group from the IT Department visited the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) to study the Kavach automatic train protection system for their obstacle-detection project. Three students took part.

Highlights

  • Scaled Kavach models, plus RFID tags, on-board control units and track-side equipment.
  • Demo videos of automatic braking after red-signal violations and possible collisions.
  • Discussion with RDSO engineers on how the system works and where it is heading.
  • Takeaways for the project: RFID and GPS for real-time obstacle detection, and fail-safe, redundant design.
